Networking is Key ... Everything else is irrelevant!

Being able to build my professional contacts and networking circle within the industry of entertainment public relations is a must in order to successfully market my name, brand, blog, ideas and creative ability. Over the past few weeks I have been in contact with the founders of the singersroom.com, BET affiliates, industry professionals, event planners and PR specialists, who have provided me with information of how to be successful in this competitive industry. Having the opportunity to attend the 6th Annual Jazz in the Gardens festival in Miami Gardens, FL as the official Singersroom.com representative was indeed an experience. I was able to experience first hand of how the media, press and event coordinators play a huge part in the behind the scenes activities at events and concerts.

One person in particular that I had the pleasure to meet was Byron Edwards who was apart of the event PR coordinating staff. During the event I watched him closely as he made sure that everything went smoothly between the artists and the media. After speaking with him and exchanging contact information, I still wanted to know more about him. I later found out that at the young age of 24 he is currently working with BET and their award shows along with Axiom 2Fifty Seven Group on various PR projects with big named celebrities.

“I got to where I'm at through networking, volunteering and internships.  I've been fortunate enough to be placed in situations that I have been able to leverage into other opportunities.  As a freelancer, it's always important for me to remember that my current job could allow me to find my next job.  Also, building relationships with media outlets is the key to PR. - Byron

"Within PR you are ALWAYS working and the more journalists you are friends with, the easier it is to get your stories placed on websites.”  - Byron

Hearing this from a young, black, professional has truly inspired me. Along with being apart of an event of this caliber and affiliated with one the top online magazines, Singersroom.com has truly been the best experience thus far.

However I understand that I may have a long way to go and its not all going to be easy, but it feels great to get my face out there, network, gain contacts and establish business relationships. This will be beneficial in assisting me with future negotiations with future clients and PR agencies.
